Pro–Democracy Activists demand DOJ to Indict Coup Leaders

New York, NY – Dozens of pro-democracy activists joined members of Rise and Resist at the steps of the New York Public Library on January 6, 2022, one year after the violent insurrection in Washington DC seeking to overthrow the election results, to demand Merrick Garland and the Department of Justice to immediately hold all high-level seditionists accountable for their crimes.

One sign read “Indict the Coup Caucus” and listed eight of the Congressional Republicans who are most clearly implicated. Another read “Indict the Crime Family” with a list that included the Trump children and other family members.

Other signs said, “Indict Rep. Green,” “Indict Rep. Gosar,” “Indict Mike Flynn,” and “Indict the Pillow Idiot.” Chants loudly repeated the message: Indict the Leaders.

The crowd grew quiet while participants phoned the Department of Justice to urge targeting of what were called, “…the real perps of January 6.”

The sense of urgency was palpable among the nearly 100 participants in the action. Of the 700+ participants who’ve been investigated and charged, not one is an actual leader.

They are the worker bees, the cannon fodder, taking orders and doing violence in service of The Big Lie that Trump won the election.

It’s been a year, and not one leader has been indicted! More upsetting to the demonstrators is the fact that the public is being kept in the dark as to who is even being investigated! The lack of consequences has emboldened the plotters and their followers.

As a result, the assault on democracy continues in the form of hundreds of voter suppression laws, death threats against poll workers, the usurping of nonpartisan voting, and the removal of leaders who stood up against efforts to steal the vote.

Jamie Bauer of Rise and Resist said: Donald Trump tried every scheme imaginable to overturn the 2020 election results. He tried to coerce secretaries of state to not certify the election. He tried to pressure state legislatures to overturn the results. He tried to strong arm Pence to overturn the results. When all else failed he sent a mob of insurrectionists to the Capitol. Why has he not been indicted?

Rise and Resist member Leon Kirschner expressed his frustration that leaders haven’t been indicted: Where’s the urgency? Our government was nearly overthrown! When will we see charges of seditious conspiracy and incitement of insurrection for Roger Stone, Rudy Giuliani, Steve Bannon, Alex Jones and Michael Flynn? Mark Meadows defied a congressional subpoena – why hasn’t he been indicted already? Did members of congress really lead scouting tours of the U. S. Capitol with Proud Boys and Oath Keepers on January 5th? What happened to the pipe bomb iinvestigation? There are so many questions – why isn’t the Attorney General holding regular press conferences? Every day that passes without real accountability is another day that our democracy is threatened.

Activists demanded that Merrick Garland and the DOJ move swiftly to investigate coup leaders and indict those found responsible. Anything short of full accountability for their criminal actions will encourage them and their followers to continue the coup and repeat the script in future elections. Next time they may succeed.
