New York, NY — At a time when the risk of nuclear use is the highest since the Cold War, a coalition of U.S. Anti-Nuclear groups held a rally on March 5, 2025 at the Isaiah Wall and marched to the U.S. Mission to the United Nations to coincide with the Third Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) to call on the Trump Administration to attend the meetings and sign the Treaty.
Featured speakers included survivors of the atomic bombings of Japan in 1945, a family member of a survivor of a nuclear test in the Pacific, and an Indigenous activist from New Mexico, where their lands were contaminated by uranium activities, radioactive waste, and radioactive fallout from the first atomic bomb test. We will also have an activist from Democratic Republic of the Congo and youth from Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The Meeting of States Parties from March 3 to March 7, 2025 brings together scientific experts, representatives of governments who have ratified or signed the treaty, members of non-governmental organizations, and parliamentarians across the globe, all of whom are continuing to work towards the total elimination of nuclear weapons. Seventy-three nations and states have ratified the treaty, which entered into force on January 22, 2021.
“This year marks the 80th Anniversary of the first atomic bomb test and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki,” said Sally Jones of Peace Action New York State. “With all the knowledge we have accumulated over the decades about the futility of maintaining nuclear weapons arsenals, now is the time to get the job done of abolishing them. And the Ban Treaty is the best vehicle we have for doing this,” she added.
