In place of Trump joint session of Congress address thousands attended People’s Address events across America during #ResistTrumpTuesdays

NATIONWIDE – Thousands of people gathered at Congressional offices and at town squares across the country on February 28, 2017; to respond to Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress tonight with their own People’s Address. There will be People’s Address events at Brooklyn Borough Hall in New York City (7:00pm) and Washington DC (Independence Ave SE and First St at 7:30pm) and dozens more events around the country, from late morning into the evening.

At People’s Address events, participants will speak out about their own visions for what we want to see in our nation, rooted in justice and solidarity, in stark contrast to Trump’s plans. At some events, participants will also express dissent to Trump by banging pots and pans to make joyful noises, inspired by the Latin American protest tradition of cacerolazos (meaning casseroles). A Cacerolazo (casserole) is a form of protest that consists of a group of people making noise by banging pots, pans and utensils that is popular in Latin American countries.

It’s been over a month since Trump took office. We have seen blatant attacks on our communities, a new administration that has no respect or value for basic human dignities and a President who is so corrupt there have been multiple calls for investigation. From the Muslim ban to ICE Raids and this week with Trump telling schools to ignore the law that protects trans kids in school, we say enough is enough!

On Tuesday February 28, 2017, Donald Trump will address a joint session of Congress for the first time. Instead of watching a speech that will undermine communities, Activists will be convening the People’s Address: A Cacerolazo! The People’s Address is a gathering to share stories and hopes for our country and our communities

“Tonight, Trump will dominate the airwaves giving an address to Congress that will surely chill millions of Americans to the bone.” said Nelini Stamp, Working Families Party’s membership director. “We want to make sure every American — including our representatives in Congress — can hear what the people want for our nation’s future. So we’re holding our own addresses.”
The People’s Addresses are a series of events coordinated by the Working Families Party and are part of #ResistTrumpTuesdays weekly protests. Supporting partners of the People’s Address events include MoveOn.org and United We Dream. Since Election Day, the Working Families Party has mobilized grassroots resistance to Trump with its #ResistTrumpTuesdays campaign. Tens of thousands of people have participated in more than 500 #ResistTrumpTuesdays protests at congressional offices, “quickly becoming a staple of this charged moment,” according to CNN.
