Amnesty International Candlelight Vigil to Protest Trump Muslim Ban
New York – On March 6th, 2017, President Trump signed another Executive Order banning people from several Muslim-majority countries. The new ban affects approximately 180,000,000 Iranian, Syrian, Libyan, Somalian, Sudanese and Yemeni citizens. To put it in context, that’s more than half the population of the United States.
On Sunday, April 9th activists across NYC participated in a day of action. At sundown, Amnesty International’s Brooklyn chapter held a candlelight vigil on the steps of Borough Hall for a NoBan // NoWall Vigil. “We must hold space to support each other and recognize we are not alone in our determination for peace and human rights for all.” said a spokesperson
Participants light 1,800 candles, each representing 100,000 individuals of the six countries. Amnesty International recognizes the discriminatory and xenophobic nature of this ban and calls on citizens to stand in solidarity with them, Muslim communities, and those who have been persecuted or experienced human rights violations because of their faith and religious practices.
Amnesty International is a Nobel Peace Prize-winning global movement of more than 7 million people who campaign for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all. The organization investigates and exposes abuses, educates and mobilizes the public, and works to protect people wherever justice, freedom, truth and dignity are denied.
