Ten Thousand Protesters Chanted “Not My President” Outside Trump Tower in NYC
An estimate of ten thousand demonstrators took the streets of Manhattan on Wednesday night and converged outside Trump Tower in Midtown to protest the election of Donald J. Trump as president.
In New York, the protests started in separate waves from Union Square and Columbus Circle and snaked their way through Midtown. They marched more than 40 blocks uptown to picket outside Trump Tower in midtown.
The colossal demonstration appeared to be largely peaceful, forced streets to be closed, snarled traffic and drew a large police presence.
As they weaved through the streets of midtown to get to Trump Tower at 57th Street and Fifth Avenue, protesters faced threats of arrest from NYPD for blocking vehicular traffic.
Protesters gathered outside Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue near 56th Street, where the president-elect lives, chanting “Not our president” and “New York hates Trump” many of them carried signs that said, among other things, “Dump Trump” “Love Trumps Hate” “Not My President” .
Loaded NYC Sanitation Department trucks lined Fifth Avenue for two blocks outside the tower as a form of protection.
Fellow New Yorkers watched the protests, and many who live in the area said they didn’t mind the slowdown of their walk and nighttime commute home.
Similar protests happened in several cities across the country, including Boston, Chicago, Seattle and Washington, and at college campuses in California, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.
