New York, NY – On International Workers Day, May 1st, 2017; immigrants, workers, and activists held several marches to targets throughout downtown Manhattan to highlight the attacks on workers and the criminalization of the immigrant community  in conjunction with “Un Día Sin Inmigrantes” strikes happening around the country. The 6th Annual “Immigrant Workers Justice Tour” will speak out on issues of worker exploitation, detention and deportation of undocumented immigrants, as well as the criminalization and incarceration of low-income communities of color.

They were joined by workers from the Tom Cat Bakery and B&H workers campaigns – who are striking on May Day.

“We know that politicians’ hollow rhetoric of “sanctuary cities” don’t protect our communities, especially under a militarized police force that criminalizes, incarcerates, and systematically collaborates to deport our loved ones. But, our communities are powerful, resilient, and ready to fight. With May Day 2017 as yet another milestone, we’ll continue to organize and build toward the future we want, need, and deserve.” Oscar Diaz, ICE-Free, NYC.

The demonstration will highlight the attacks on immigrant communities from employers and both federal and local policies. Low-level police enforcement and harassment, through practices such as ‘Broken Windows’ policing not only criminalizes immigrants, including street vendors and delivery workers, it also puts them on the federal radar. Each set of fingerprints taken from every NYPD arrest gets sent to federal officials, providing data to ICE. This type of enforcement has continued under the leadership of Mayor Bill de Blasio and the City Council. In fact, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the deportation-minded Trump administration’s lead legal mind, has praised ‘Broken Windows’ policing.

Many politicians are anti-Trump in rhetoric but pro-Trump in action. The Immigrant Worker Justice Tour will hold them all accountable by taking the issues to the streets to reiterate to the Trump administration and to the police that no one is illegal.
MIGRANT POWER ALLIANCE: A new alliance of migrant rights groups and organizations based in New York City who are directly affected by unjust and inhumane immigration policies. Migrant Power Alliance strongly believes in human rights for all, the right to mobility, family unity and an end to the current inhumane detention and deportation.
