Environmental Activists Bring Message to Fifth Avenue Easter Parade

New York, NY – Members and sympathizers of Rise And Resist participated in the Easter Parade walk on Fifth Avenue, on April 1,2018; with Fussy Lo Mein as Mother Nature handing out Easter eggs decorated with ‘The Rights of Spring’. In a very creative way, they demanded the right to drink clean water, the right to clean air to breathe, the right to swimmable lakes and rivers, the right to renewable energy sources. The planet belongs to all of us and we need to protect HER.
Participants met at noon at Fifth Avenue and 58th Street, wearing Easter bonnets with Rights of Spring, flowers, garden veggies and animals. The group marched as close as possible to Trump Tower to bring their message to protect the environment.
Easter marks the arrival of Spring and the annual rebirth of the natural world, a celebration of the eternal fertility and bounty of Mother Nature. NYC’s Easter Parade is a promenade up Fifth Avenue where New Yorkers display new Spring outfits and especially ornately decorated hats. Unfortunately, the Environmental Policies of Trump are the most degrading to the natural world since the dawn of the Industrial Age, and the administration is hell-bent on turning all these cherished natural wonders to toxic filth.
Every year on Easter Sunday, Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue comes alive as New Yorkers in flower-draped bonnets and spring-colored finery celebrate the rebirth of Planet Earth. On Sunday, April 1, 2018; New York’s Rise and Resist joined the Parade with a message of resistance against the Trump Administration, which destroying the planet and endangering human lives with its reversal of initiatives to curb climate change and its roll back of environmental protections for the clean air and water, biodiversity, and public lands that Americans depend upon for our health and well-being.
“We are participating in the Annual Easter Parade to celebrate the Earth and resist an administration that is destroying it,” said Rise and Resist spokesperson Betsy Andrews. “We’re frankly terrified that under Donald Trump, the United States has left the Paris Climate Agreement; the EPA, the Department of the Interior, and FEMA have scrubbed climate change from their missions; our public lands have been left unprotected and vulnerable; and every Trump appointment has emphasized corporate profits over the science and sound policies meant to protect the air, water, and land Americans depend upon for our future. We must resist.”
Adding to the day’s pageantry, Rise and Resist presented a street theater of animals and plants led by a spectacular Mother Earth, with demands that the Trump administration change its deadly course on climate change and the environment. We ask our elected officials to sign the Paris Climate Agreement, enact stronger protections for clean air, water, and lands; protect the biodiversity humans depend upon for food and safety; support clean, forward-thinking energy initiatives; and enforce scientifically proven environmental controls for future generations of Americans. New Yorkers wer encouraged to join Rise and Resist in demanding that our leaders choose American health and safety over corporate profits and dangerous, antiquated industries.
As midterm elections approach, we send the message: “If politicians will not provide the environmental protections we need to live safely on this planet, we will fight against them and vote them out.”
